Young describes an especially harrowing scene of violence when coming out his mother, who was a devout Southern Baptist. Despite being sent to work at age 15, Young earned a GED and graduated from North Shore Community College with a degree in Art History. They would go on to work in various jobs, none of which was as satisfying as working as a bouncer in Fran’s Place. Because not for nothing, I felt like it was a small blessing from God.\" Because God knew that I wanted to transition, but I couldn't afford the insurance. I couldn't afford to pay for that, you're talking over $30,000! So to me, getting breast cancer was a blessing in disguise because— I tell people —because I was able to have my breast removed and start my transition. They were still experimenting with the do's and the don'ts, and the adds and the minuses.At one point, if you start[ed] transitioning back then, you could risk massive heart attack, blindness, anything! Anything. But now today, science has really perfected transitioning for people. And by scientists doing that, they're making life so much easier for people like myself and others to become who they really are. What we feel we are on the inside, we should be able to show that on the outside. Back then it was like, \"Yeah,\" you know, \"This would be great to do, but there's just not enough out there yet. There's not enough out there.\" And now it's like— I'm involved in social media chat rooms with other trans men, and it's just amazing how it has changed our lives. It's made our mental health better, it's made us feel more confident in ourselves. You're jus happy and you're alive now: you're showing who you really are.
