[When] you grow up like that, honey, it's weird. It's strange. But it was a good life. I had a good life. I was trying to change. Me and my brother would buy me basketballs to play with. I would take them out and give them to the boys. It was life like that. I grew up my way. I really didn't come out until after I left and came out in the street. That's when I completely came out. [I was thirteen.] Back then Detroit, Michigan, was rough when I came out. I had to work the streets. I had a rough life coming up. But I'm here and I enjoy it, and I enjoy what I do. I enjoy it. It's an art for me. And whoever does it, it should be an art for everybody. If you're into it, you're into it. If you wanna do this, you wanna do it and make a living out of it, okay? And other than that, I'm just here having a good time. I got a birthday, the 24th coming up, Christmas Eve. I'm a Christmas Eve baby. My youngest sister is still alive, and I'm the baby of the family. But we talk every day, me and her back and forth, keeping in touch. It's good to keep in touch with your family. You know I mean? It's good if you have them. If you don't, still keep in touch with some friends. and people that you have. Keep yourself going. I always kept to myself and looking around, but you can tell I was sort of gay. You can look and see me [that] I was gay. You know what I mean? But I wasn't that kind. I was a closet. I was a 'hide-in-the-corner' kind of gay. I kept it to myself, yeah. I didn't really come out until I hit the streets in Detroit, Michigan. That's when I let it all out. A friend of mine said, \"Come on up here and you'll enjoy it,\" and when I got here, everybody liked me and she left me here! She got mad and just left me. I thought that was very rude. I said, \"It was very wrong. If you're a friend of mine and you invite me somewhere, do not leave like that.\" I had nowhere to go, no place to live. The only person that opened their heart up to me, at the time, [was] a person I [was] working with, Kara Daniels. She didn't even know me. She said, \"You got any place?\" I said, \"I have no place to go.\" Do you know there is a God? You know that? It really is, [he'll] help you out. She doesn't know me, and I don't know her.\" And after that, we hit it off. We're like this now. If you saw the cops coming, you had to undress and make sure you were right. It was something, on streets in Detroit, coming up, honey. I've been raped. I've been cut up. I've been beat up. I've been everything. Yes, it was hard back then. That's me— and I tell the girls now, I try to tell 'em, I said: \"Be careful [with] whatever you're doing, honey. Don't take a stranger home unless you know them. Don't do that. Don't get into strangers cars, unless you know them. Don't do all that, because it's rough in our lifestyle. Even though they say, they like you. Even though the people say they do like you, there's always somebody out there that doesn't.\" You know, what I mean? \"God bless y'all, and be careful in whatever you do. Just live your life and enjoy our life, because that's what we're here for.\" They're finally accepting us. They're finally getting to open up to us. And there's nothing wrong with just being yourself and live your life.
